{"id":2078,"date":"2016-04-13T21:55:17","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T20:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/childandfamily.staging.properdesign.rs\/?post_type=snippet&#038;p=2078"},"modified":"2024-10-26T18:53:52","modified_gmt":"2024-10-26T17:53:52","slug":"parent-discrimination-child-self-esteem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/parent-discrimination-child-self-esteem\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents&#8217; experience of discrimination affects their children&#8217;s self-esteem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study that surveyed Mexican and Mexican-American adolescents along with one of their parents found a correlation between parents\u2019 experience of <a href=\"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/links-between-mental-health-and-childs-exposure-to-race-discrimination\/\">discrimination<\/a> (such as suffering a racial insult or being excluded from an activity) and feelings of sadness and low self-esteem on the part of the child. Also, when parents had experienced discrimination and also actively engaged in what the authors call \u2018ethnic socialization\u2019 (for example, talking to their children about how people might try to limit them because of their ethnicity), adolescents suffered low mood and low self-esteem.
