The importance of a baby&#8217;s first 1,000 days <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/early-moments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The first 1,000 days of a child\u2019s life<\/a>, from conception to age two, are an important period for child development. For example, although the human brain continues to develop and change throughout life, the first 1,000 days are a period of rapid brain development. However, during this time <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/esr\/article\/38\/6\/849\/6530161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large differences across a range of child outcomes<\/a> begin to emerge between children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and their peers from more affluent backgrounds. Supporting the early home learning environment <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/language-development-early-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High-quality early home learning environments<\/a> typically consist of early play and learning opportunities, including parents and caregivers engaging with their young children through <a href=\"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/cognitive-development-parent-reading-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">play<\/a> and verbal responsiveness. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research shows<\/a> that in-person interventions that help parents and caregivers understand how to create stimulating and supportive early home learning environments can significantly benefit parenting knowledge and practice.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Digital interventions can have significant benefits for parents and caregivers in their child\u2019s first 1,000 days.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These interventions can also support strong parent-child interactions, such as increasing parents\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/latino-african-american-fathers-play-math\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sensitivity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/mothering-cognitive-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsiveness<\/a> to their child\u2019s interests and needs when playing and communicating with them. Interventions have also been shown to improve child development outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>New digital technologies, in the form of parent-based applications (apps) used on smartphones or tablets, have recently emerged as a way to increase access to these supportive services for parents.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_growing_presence_and_popularity_of_parent-based_apps\"><\/span><strong>3. The growing presence and popularity of parent-based apps<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Parent-based apps are primarily designed to be used by parents or caregivers. They are intended to encourage offline interactions and <a href=\"https:\/\/discovery.ucl.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/10149354\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning opportunities<\/a> with children. The number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesta.org.uk\/project\/mapping-parenting-technology\/could-parenting-apps-help-improve-outcomes-for-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parent-based apps available to download has grown significantly<\/a>, from three apps released in 2010 to between 42-46 new apps per year between 2018 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This is also a rapidly growing sector with venture capital investments currently <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/news\/articles\/vc-funding-parent-tech-child-care-startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worth nearly $1.4 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, very little research has evaluated the impact of these new digital technologies during children\u2019s first 1,000 days. Evaluating a new parent-based app<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To address this gap, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2022.998170\/full?&amp;utm_source=Email_to_authors_&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_content=T1_11.5e1_author&amp;utm_campaign=Email_publication&amp;field=&amp;journalName=Frontiers_in_Psychology&amp;id=998170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evaluated a new parent-based app in a pilot randomized control trial<\/a> with parents of children from birth to six months old in the United Kingdom. (The opportunity for this study arose from a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nurseryworld.co.uk\/news\/article\/interview-clare-stead-and-laura-outhwaite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collaboration<\/a> with the app developer).<\/p>\n<p>The app includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliikiapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,026 daily age-appropriate activities<\/a> for parents to choose from across eight areas of child development, such as language, socioemotional, sensory, and physical\/ motor skills. Each of the activities explains to parents what to do and how to do it, using low-cost resources easily accessible in most homes.<\/p>\n<p>In our study, we sought to understand whether the app could help boost parents\u2019 self-efficacy during their child\u2019s infancy<strong>. <\/strong>Parental self-efficacy encompasses parents\u2019 beliefs or judgments about their ability to be successful in their role as caregiver. It helps guide their interactions with their young child and plays an <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/cch.12661?casa_token=peuxrr6iNv4AAAAA%3AUSnaRX1GCTDS54MLvSNIzrqW_lVRnWeU0xXPv4NKEuIqExrbkRUpD9ZyJWfSIg4puaPzfWjVIGHqBeY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">important role in the parent-child relationship<\/a>, as well as in child development outcomes and parents\u2019 mental health. We focused on parents of children aged 0-6 months because of the emerging evidence on parental self-efficacy in the earliest months, as well as the availability of parental self-efficacy measures in this age range.<\/p>\n<h3>What research has shown<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.org.uk\/what-we-do\/child-poverty\/uk-child-poverty\/in-schools\/families-connect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> has shown that parent interventions aimed at increasing parents\u2019 skills and knowledge also boost parents\u2019 self-efficacy. In our study, we asked whether digital delivery of parent education, through the parent-based app activities, would also positively affect parent self-efficacy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Parent-based apps could offer an accessible and affordable solution for boosting parents\u2019 self-efficacy and improving the early home learning environment.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Randomized Control Trial Design<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Seventy-nine parents of children from birth to six months took part in the study. On average, parents were 33 years old and children were three-and-a-half months. Parents were recruited from a convenience sample, and mostly consisted of White British mothers with a university-level education.<\/p>\n<p>Half of the parents were randomly assigned to the <em>treatment group<\/em> and were asked to use the app with their child every day for four weeks. The other half were assigned to the <em>active control group<\/em> and were sent weekly e-mails that contained three activity ideas. The activities were selected from the ideas in the app, but the e-mails provided only brief descriptions of what to do for each activity. No additional details were provided, and activities were not tailored to the age or stage of development of the child as they were in the app.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Using_the_parent-based_app_increased_parental_self-efficacy\"><\/span><strong>5. Using the parent-based app increased parental self-efficacy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ninety percent of parents in the treatment group reported feeling \u201cconfident\u201d or \u201cvery confident\u201d on all the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1365-2648.2007.04445.x?casa_token=NKyUfPbCqPQAAAAA%3ArEOBQNTxa9KzQzPYNHKCXLMWCeicVsxtO6Ig15phg6j516qG2h0DIeC8bRKey8oV-HIsrcsVJ8waY6g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">standardized questions about parental self-efficacy<\/a>. This group\u2019s self-efficacy ratings were also significantly higher than those of the active control group. Moreover, in the treatment group, those who used the parent-based app more times per week over the four-week period also reported greater self-efficacy.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Parent-based_apps_may_be_a_promising_avenue_for_accessible_parent_education\"><\/span><strong>6. Parent-based apps may be a promising avenue for accessible parent education<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This new evidence establishes proof of concept that digital interventions can have significant benefits for parents and caregivers in their child\u2019s first 1,000 days. For example, studies can help establish the impact of these innovations on child development outcomes as well as with parents from different backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Our results are limited to the specific parent-based app we evaluated. Additional research is needed to evaluate the quality and impact of other parent-based apps and to identify which specific content or features are most beneficial.
