{"id":13241,"date":"2020-02-08T10:58:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-08T10:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/?p=13241"},"modified":"2024-05-11T22:33:25","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T21:33:25","slug":"coparenting-fathers-caring-playing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/childandfamilyblog.com\/coparenting-fathers-caring-playing\/","title":{"rendered":"Positive coparenting between mothers and fathers is associated with more involvement by fathers in caring for and playing with their children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"s3\">The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0study contributes to our growing understanding of how complex family systems operate, with different relationships influencing each other.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">When parents work well together as a team \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">known as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2013<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0fathers tend to be more involved in caring for the children<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, according to a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">new study<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">disadvantaged parents<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">in<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">the USA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">It is easy to understand why positive\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0could promote more father engagement<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">why\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">more father engagement could promote a better parental relationship.<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">This finding\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">suggests that when it comes to help with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">rais<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ing<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0young children<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, it\u2019s important to<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">support both<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">mothers and fathers. A\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">federal\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">program<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0in the USA<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/ofa\/programs\/healthy-marriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s6\">Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s3\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">which began in 2005,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">provides exactly this kind of support among low<\/span><span class=\"s3\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">income families. The study of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">and father engagement was part of the evaluation of this program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">Whilst\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0and father engagement are linked for all fathers in the \u2018here and now\u2019, the study also found\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">link across time.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Resident fathers were more likely to be<\/span><span class=\"s3\">active<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ly<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">involve<\/span><span class=\"s3\">d<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">in care\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">when\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">a<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">child\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">was<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">36 months old if both\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">mother and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">father report<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ed<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0better\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">when the child was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">15<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0months old<\/span><span class=\"s3\">. This link was not found among non-resident fathers, perhaps because the<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ir<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0inconsistent presence means that what happens at one time point in the family\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">has less effect on what\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">happens at another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">The link between\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0and later father involvement was not found in relation to fathers\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s7\">playing<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0more with children<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2014p<\/span><span class=\"s3\">erhaps because fathers may engage in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">play\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">regardless of the quality of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0relationship with the mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">In the study, involving 1,908 families, mothers and fathers were interviewed by phone when their child was 15 months old and again when 36 months old. Fathers were\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">classified\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">resident if they lived with the mother most or all of the time, and non-resident if none or only some of the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">Coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0was measured with ratings like \u201cMy child\u2019s other parent and I communicate well about our child\u201d and \u201cI feel good about my child\u2019s other parent\u2019s judgment about what is right for our child.\u201d Both parents<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0responses were combined into a single measure of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">coparenting<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">Involvement in caring was measured by asking fathers how\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">often<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">they did things like dress\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">and feed\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">the child<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0or<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0change diapers.
